Epson budget multifunction printers of the past have always been lacking something in the quality department and well as having expensive running costs in terms of printer cartridges. The SX200 is different because it uses a separate ink cartridge for each of its four colours which means you only have to change the colour that empty ad no ink is wasted, which saves money in the long run. A set of Epson SX200 ink cartridges still costs around £30 but there are compatible Epson ink cartridges available which cost half as much. The built quality is also slightly improved but the operation noise is still higher than average and some of the plastics are still feel a bit flimsy. The print quality however is excellent and goes far beyond anything you would expect from a budget inkjet printer. With a class leading 5760 x 1440dpi the SX200 is capable of printing great quality text documents with clear and sharp font and photos with amazingly clarity and full of vivid colour tones. The scanner has an equally impressive resolution and it fast too, but scans have a slight magenta cast to them which but this editable using the bundled photo editing software. The copier function works without the need for a PC which is useful for when you’re in a rush and don’t have time to wait for the PC to boot up. The weakness point of the SX200 is its printing speed which also affects the copier, Epson claim 34ppm (pages per minute) but the real world figure is more like 4ppm and this is slow even for an inkjet printer. A lack of speed however doesn’t make the SX200 bad printer because it better than its competitors is all other areas.
